Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
